Chapter 14

Jenny had only one thing on her mind the next morning – tracking down the suspicious man George had talked about. She didn’t exactly distrust Adam, knowing he would keep an eye out for the man. But his way of attacking a problem was vastly different from hers. And he was bound by rules and processes that were sure to cause delays.

“What’s on your mind?” Star looked up from chopping onions and peppers for the omelets. “You have beaten those eggs to death, sweetie.”

She had already been in the kitchen when Jenny came down that morning, ready to leave for the café.

“It’s this man George mentioned. How do I look for him?”

“Start at the most obvious place.”

Jenny blamed herself for ignoring the obvious. It was too early to call the inn. Betty Sue was still recovering and they were encouraging her to sleep in. She wouldn’t be happy to be woken up by a phone call, that too one that was connected with Gracie.

“I should have thought of that.”

“You take on a lot.”

It was time to start the café. Jenny opened the doors and greeted Captain Charlie, always the first person outside.

“Good morning! Cheese omelets for breakfast, with carrot cake muffins. And I’m making chicken pot pie later for lunch.”

The old salt rubbed his hands, smiling broadly.

“Wish I could stay for a hot breakfast, Jenny, but I’m taking some blokes out on the bay. I should be back for lunch.”

She packed half a dozen muffins for him, along with a container of coffee.

The usual breakfast crowd began to come in, accompanied by new faces. Jenny figured they must be relations or friends who were in town for the pie contest. Mandy arrived, crackling with nervous energy.

“Muffins and coffee to go please, Jenny.”

“How’s the pie contest shaping up?”

“We’re calling it the Eastern Shore Pie Fest now. It’s bigger and better, Jenny. You’ll see. Have you walked down Main Street lately? I want your take on the new decorations we put up.”

Jenny promised to check it out when she got a chance.

The steady stream of people kept them busy. Star glanced at the clock some time later and forced her to take a break. They split an omelet in two and Jenny ate in the kitchen while she dialed the Bayview Inn.

Heather answered in her usual drawl. Jenny marveled at how she managed to sound bored at the start of the day.

“Mornin’,” she greeted. “Is this about Billy?”

“No. Why?”

“Never mind,” Heather replied.

“Did something happen?” Jenny was anxious.

“Just Grandma on her usual rant,” Heather yawned. “I was just coming over to the café, Jenny. Is the crowd out of control?”

Jenny explained she had called for a different reason. She brought up the man George had mentioned. Was he staying at the inn by any chance?

That didn’t go down well with Heather.

“Don’t you think I would have told you, Jenny? I know all of you think I’m a dolt, but I can remember the people currently occupying rooms at my inn.”

Jenny hastened to soothe her.
